As described by Selnick’s article:
Apparently this picture (top) is currently circulating Facebook. This is some racist bullshit. Immigrants are dangerous? Is that the message?
Well clearly these people don’t know about the man in the cowboy hat from the Boston Marathon Bombing (bottom pic).
His name is Carlos Arrendondo. He has been a peace activist since 2004, when his son was killed serving his country in Iraq.
Carlos is an immigrant from Costa Rica. At first, he was an undocumented immigrant, but is now a US citizen.
When the bombs went off in boston that day, Carlos ran towards the carnage. He found Jeffery Bauman (the man in the wheelchair) lying on the ground in a pool of blood, both his legs blown off. He picked up Jeffery and carried him to a wheelchair, all while pinching shut his exposed artery to stop him from bleeding out.
Later, from his hospital bed, Jeffery described the bombing suspects to the police. Without Jeff, the police wouldn’t have been able to identify Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother so quickly. And without Carlos, Jeff probably wouldn’t have lived to talk to the police.
Preventing legal immigration won’t stop massacres like this from occurring (just ask natural born US citizens like James Holmes, Adam Lanza, Jared Laughner, Eric Harris and Dylan klebold, and Timothy McVeigh).
But it will make it harder for the Carlos Arrendondos’ of the world to save more lives.
It’s time to get pissed. The U.S. law that would turn Google, Facebook, and Twitter into legally immune government spies just passed the House.
We expected CISPA to pass; that’s why this spring, we’re going to organize the largest online privacy protest in history to make sure CISPA is gone for good.
And, in response to (Republican) Rep. Mike Rogers’ accusation that CISPA opponents are just “14 year-old tweeter[s] in the basement”, we thought we’d also challenge Rep. Rogers to get on live national television and debate a 14 year-old in a basement on CISPA. The search for the 14 year-old begins. Are you or do you know a 14 year-old who could totally school a congressman on this issue?
This bill affects everyone — not just U.S. citizens. Anyone with a Facebook account could now have their data shipped directly to the U.S. government. That’s why Internet users overwhelmingly oppose this bill. Over 1.5 million people signed petitions against it. But Congress didn’t listen.
Does this remind you of something? Yep, this is the exact position we were in with SOPA last year. Then the Internet rose up and we made history with the SOPA strike.
Join the largest online privacy protest in history to make sure CISPA goes the same route as SOPA and doesn’t become the law that breaks the 4th Amendment. Are you in?
CISPA threatens our most basic rights. Privacy is important not just for our security but for our rights to freedom of expression. The giant tech companies that stood with Internet users against SOPA are not going to help us this time (but some of the large sites like Mozilla, Imgur, and Reddit are all against CISPA and we love them).
Only a massive grassroots outcry will stop this bill. We’re starting to build the tools. But we need your help.
Can you share the flyer below on social media? And tell everyone you know to sign up to join the protest?
I liked this so I could come back and find it. I don’t like it. I hate it. I want to punch this kid in the face.
Gaga has a lot of problems, a massive list of problems, but whatever else she is, she’s also a bisexual woman and policing her queerness is bullshit. erasing her queerness is bullshit.
all the people I see tagging this post and the other, with the actual video, with “LGBT,” why are you bothering to include the B? what do you think it stands for? because supporting the erasure of Gaga’s queerness says to me that you either don’t believe the B exists, don’t believe it has the same value as the L, G, and T, or you feel qualified to judge who is and who isn’t queer. and if you believe any of those things, fuck you.
and if people don’t know that Gaga is bisexual, and that’s why they’re supporting this, that’s even more reason to stop doing it. if her queer identity wasn’t constantly being denied and erased, then you would know.
assigning value to or privileging some kinds of queerness over others is damaging as hell and ignorant as fuck. if you want to take on all the ways that Gaga is problematic, go for it, I’ll be right there with you. but saying she’s not queer enough is bullshit.
Jesus Fucking Christ, cosigned.
